Question by Tony McDouche: Jewelry Question: How much is the common discount on a diamond ring’s IGI appraisal?
I am buying for a diamond engagement ring and I am trying to figure out no matter whether the dollar quantity indicated on a ring’s IGI appraisal is really worth a lot in figuring out how good of a deal I am obtaining. For instance, Costco sells rings at costs that are generally about 25% and 40% less than the IGI appraisal worth. Do all jewelers discount like this? Or do some retailers in fact charge something approaching the IGI appraisal?
Thanks for your answers.

typically retaillers market their certified diamonds for less than their appraisal worth–why, due to the fact it makes clients believe they are acquiring a fantastic deal. i used to function at kay jewelers and all of the certified diamonds there were about $ 500-$ 3000 less than the appraised value.
some issues to contemplate:
also, i don’t consider IGI is as highly regarded as GIA-GIA is much more modest in its appraisals and gradings of diamonds.
also–i don’t have a costco exactly where i live, but do they supply a lifetime guarentee on the gold and the diamond itself? which means, if your diamond falls out of your ring, are you SOL or are you protected. retailers like kays guarentee the diamond for life. also a tip, if you do determine to go w/ Kay, or Belden (sister shop, exact same stuff) you can get up to ten% off of a certified diamond, 25% off regular price tag of any other diamond. they don’t advertise, so ask for a much better deal.
good luck!
